Eli is 12 months old, since birth we noticed he eyes flickered side to side. At 7 months old we were given a diagnosis of Congenital Nystagmus. Then at 8 months we also told he has occular albinism (albino eyes).Nystagmus causes involutary movement of the eyes, this will affect Eli in various ways the primary of which is reduced vision. It has been described as constantly being surrounded by a fog, as everything is blurry unless it is extremely close. Sadly, there is currently no treatment available in the UK for Congenital Nystagmus. However, we were given hope when after hours of research we found a surgeon. He is based in California and has pioneered an operation called 'The Modified Sinskey Anterior Extirpation Procedure for Nystagmus'. This procedure removes muscles from the eyes reducing and in many cases completely removing the involuntary movement.Click here for more details on the surgery.
We will need to take Eli to California for the surgery and he will need to have several check ups afterwards here in the UK under a private doctor. There is also a risk that he will require a second surgery. We will use the money raised to fund his treatment and get him this surgery which is going to make a huge impact on the rest of his life.We really appreciate anything anyone can pledge, we want to give him the best possible chances in life and we want him to grow up being able to see and love the world around him.Thank you and please feel free to contact us if you would like to help fundraise.Darren, Michelle and Eli 💙
